The 98a version can create a transparent background color allowing the image to be placed on any color background, this can also reduce file size. One of the reasons for the success of the GIF format is that it stores images in a highly compressed state, and it can be rendered into an animation sequence by using the correct software. You can get a whole range of image-editing and animation software tools from sources on the Web. You might like to try the PhotoImpact and GIF Animator applications from ULead.com and PaintShop Pro from JASC.com Both of these are available on a 30-Day trial. Microsoft also produce a GIF animator utility, and include it in their FrontPage application along whith my favourite application the Microsoft Image Composer. In fact, there are literaly hundreds of other image editing packages available, depending on your operating system and personal preferences. Because of the type of compression used, the GIF format is extreamly effective for large areas of a single color. Images that are destined to be downloaded by a visitors browser over the web, should be as small as possible.The physical size of the GIF image when displayed is not significant. What is significant is the actual GIF image file in bytes or Kb the larger the file size, the longer the download time, and the longer the user has to wait for your web site to arrive. The last thing you want is the user to leave before they have even seen it. The easiest way to reduce the file size for a GIF format image is to reduce the number of colors that it contains. The best way is to design the GIF with as few colors as possible, when 1st creating the art work, Or use the GIF Optimizer on this site and speed up your web sites download time, right now! The reduced number of colors has other advanages too, because while the browser is happy to display one GIF image containing 256 colors, it can lead to problems if it tries to display two GIF files at the same time. When both GIFs use 256 colors, but these are not the same 256 colors, in this event the browser will dither the colors, and find the best compromise between the two GIF images. This can result in a real ugly mess, with both images looking nothing like what you expected. this can happen on the PC systems that are set to 256 colors only in the 1st place. ----------How to Make"Animated GIFs"Animated Gifs are as simple or, as complicated as you want to make them. Once you have the animation software (mentioned earlier) your next step is to know what you want in your animation, then make each picture for the animation. you can animate the whole picture like an old reel of film, but it is better to animate only the part that requires to be animated. ---------- Animated GIFs Example :

I made all the pictures in paint brush and saved them as .gif file instead of the default .bmp 01 = Is the main background and picture. This pictures background image is chosen to "Leave" the background, and "Restore Previous" on all the rest. this way only the part of the animation that needs to be animated ie the mouth is all that gets animated, this type of design is highly recomended in order to keep the overall file size to a minimum. 02 = the 1st picture of the animation (NOTE: How small it is} In the animation software you can position the gifs from the TOP and from the LEFT. to position the new mouth over the old one. 03 + 04 = the same as 02 The next thing to do is choose the time delay on each picture, it is best to run the preview of the animation and adjust them to what you like the look of. the finished animation would look something like this.
As big as this animation is, the overall file size is still well under 2Kb :o) However there is nothing wrong with animating the whole picture frame for frame to start with, and mabe trying this advanced method a bit later on. If you do you will need to use the "Restore Background " setting so each picture completely replaces the last, like this black and white equestrian animation.
